Making Asheville, NC sweeter since 1994

Whether you frequent Asheville, NC’s eclectic downtown area, or are looking for an excuse to do so, make Old Europe Pastries a priority stop. We are Asheville’s longest running café, having opened our doors originally in 1994. While we have transitioned locations, our passion to deliver delicious coffee, impeccable cakes, pastries and traditional Hungarian desserts has never wavered. Having immigrated to America from Hungary, owner, founder and creator of all of our desserts, Melinda Vetro, works passionately and diligently to continue providing a great experience to every customer that walks through our doors.

Old Europe Pastries is a home away from home to every customer we have the pleasure of serving. We aim to capture the romantic and wistful cafés only found in Europe, where the perfect pastry or wonderfully pulled shot of espresso is a vacation in an of itself. Come visit us on Broadway for something to go, or enjoy time with friends and family in our cozy dining area or on our quaint sidewalk seating!

Asheville‘s Old Europe Pastries: baking and making people happy for nearly 25 years.

Opening the original doors in 1994 on Battery Avenue with her then husband Zoltan, in the Flat-Iron building, Old Europe’s creator, head baker and café founder, Melinda Vetro has persevered through a tremendous amount. Three days after her son Bence’s birth, she was back to baking, only closing their doors for business while Melinda battled breast cancer. Emerging healthy, she immediately re-opened the café in a new location at Lexington and Walnut that sadly didn’t make it through the 2008 recession. In 2010, with her son Bence, Melinda once again re-opened Old Europe in its current location downtown on Broadway!

We’ve been going strong at our one and only Broadway location for 9 years now, and have no plans of going anywhere! While Old Europe Pastries has experienced and triumphed through some tough times, there hasn’t been a single moment that Melinda’s shining joy and passion for her work has dampened. Quite the opposite! The ambiance she curates and the pastries she creates are unmatchable. We are deeply grateful to the amazing community of Asheville who have continued to enjoy our delectable creations and atmosphere. We look forward to many more years to come. Thank you Asheville!
